The film is a biblical tale about a Jewish prince and merchant, Juda Ben-Hur, living at the beginning of the 1st century in Judea. A chance encounter reunites him with his childhood friend, Messala, who has come to prepare a parade for the new governor from Rome. Judah and Messala discover their views have diverted with age, and tension soon mounts between them.  During the parade, loose tiles fall from Judah"s house, resulting in the endangerment of the governor. Despite recognizing this as an accident, Messala condemns Judah to the galleys, and imprisons his family in an effort to intimidate the Jewish populace. Judah swears to one day return and take revenge.
