Cherd Songsri’s work that conveyed his concept of Thainess to the world, The Scar is also
regarded as one of the greatest Thai films ever made. Adapted from the classic novel by Mai Muengderm, the film tells the tragic love story of Kwan and Riam, two young peasant lovers who reside in rural Bang Kapi. Despite the pledges of love they have exchanged at a spirit shrine, their families unfortunately remain rival enemies. Riam’s father tries to keep the lovers apart by selling her to Madame Thongkham in Bangkok, and she is later adopted by the woman. When Riam returns to the village, Kwan finds that she has become a noblewoman, now out of his reach.
