A medieval knight plays chess with Death in order to avoid contracting the plague during the time of the Black Death. One of Ingmar Bergman’s most difficult and refused film pitches became one of the late 1950s most popular works, The Seventh Seal. The cast featured a number of leading Swedish actors of the time, including Max von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, Nils Poppe, Gunnar Björnstrand and Inga Landgré. The film was awarded the Jury’s Special Prize at Cannes, and is one of the most quoted and plagiarized films of all time. The same year (1957), Bergman made one of his most iconic films: Wild Strawberries.
